A Conversation with …

… Emily about her research and why she is involved with STEM outreach.

What is your current position?

I’m currently a Physics PhD student at Yale.

Where did you go to college?

Duke

Where did you grow up?

Staten Island, NY

What was your favorite subject in high school?

That’s tough.. Music theory, history, math, physics

What is the focus of your research?

I build telescopes in South Africa that measure the size of the Universe and how it changed billions of years ago.

What is the coolest part of your job?

I travel to lots of cool places (like South Africa, where I got to go on Safaris) and get to climb on giant telescopes. I really love building things and working with my hands, and it is very satisfying to see the things that I build solve unsolved problems.

What is your favorite part about doing STEM outreach?

Watching students light up when they see physics/engineering concepts come to life. Their passion gives me hope for the future, and reminds me how lucky I am to study physics for a living.

What is a fun fact about you?

I was a level 10 gymnast in high school.
